Gordon S. Heddell
Gordon Heddell is the Founder and Corporate Director of his own consulting firm, The Gordon Heddell Group, located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The organization provides advice and counsel to both government and private industry organizations on matters related to defense, law enforcement, and national security.
In July 2013, at the request of the Administration, Mr. Heddell accepted a temporary position as the Deputy Inspector General for Operations/Acting Inspector General of the Department of Labor, agreeing to serve in that capacity until such time as the President could nominate, and the Senate confirm, a permanent Inspector General. In December 2013, Mr. Heddell completed his work at the Labor Department and returned to private life.
In January 2012, Mr. Heddell accepted a position as Senior Executive Advisor to Booz Allen Hamilton’s top Leadership Group in McLean, VA. In this capacity, he provided advice regarding business development, marketing strategy, and government operations.
Mr. Heddell was nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be the seventh Inspector General of the Department of Defense on July 14, 2009, one year after being designated by the President to be Acting Inspector General. In this capacity Mr. Heddell was responsible for oversight of all programs and operations of the Department; to include inspector General oversight of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force; and oversight of military operations of two wars in Southwest Asia.
As Inspector General, Mr. Heddell served as a chief advisor to the Secretary of Defense. He also Chaired the Interagency Coordination Group of Inspectors General for the Realignment of U.S. Marine Forces from Okinawa to Guam; and the Defense Council on Integrity and Efficiency.
In 2000, Mr. Heddell was nominated by the President to serve as the 6th Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Labor where for eight years he led efforts to combat the influence of Labor Racketeering and Organized Crime in the American work place; as well as oversight of all programs and operations of the Department.
Mr. Heddell also was commissioned as a Special Agent in the United States Secret Service for over two decades. In this capacity he was one of the Service’s top leaders, actively involved in executing the Service’s dual mission of protecting the President of the United States (protecting 6 past Presidents); and conducting criminal investigations to protect the financial structure of the Nation. Mr. Heddell held a number of key executive positions to include:
- Assistant Director;
- Special Agent in Charge of the Vice Presidential Protective Division;
- Deputy Assistant Director – Office of Training & Secret Service Academy;
- Deputy Assistant Director – Office of Inspections & Special Investigations (Worldwide);
- Liaison official to the Central Intelligence Agency;
Mr. Heddell began his Government service as a United States Army Chief Warrant Officer, Rotary Wing Aviator, serving during the Vietnam era in both Korea and Taiwan.
Mr. Heddell is the recipient of the prestigious Meritorious Presidential Rank Award for Outstanding Government Service and was awarded the elite Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service, the Defense Department’s highest civilian award. He was also selected by the University of Illinois-Springfield and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, as recipient of the 2009 and 2013 Outstanding Alumni Achievement Awards, respectively. One of Mr. Heddell’s proudest achievement’s however, was the creation of major partnerships between the Secret Service and two inner city Washington, D.C. public schools.
Mr. Heddell earned his master’s degree in Legal Studies from the University of Illinois and his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Missouri. He served as a Woodrow Wilson Public Service Fellow from 1994-2000. Mr. Heddell graduated at the top of his Secret Service/Treasury Federal Law Enforcement Academy class.
